Maverick, not a RINO

by pugpugmom on June 30, 2010

In 2010, the electorate has declared war on incumbents. Bob Bennett lost his senate seat in the Utah primary! Thank goodness, no incumbent seat is safe. That’s the way it should be.

Isn’t this guy a RINO?
John McCain is the only incumbent who should remain in office. Huh, the guy is a RINO!

True conservatives might not see eye to eye with McCain on some of the issues. He voted in favor of Sarbanes-Oxley, and the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). He co-authored the McCain-Feingold Campaign Reform Act. Nevertheless, he’s still a far cry better than his opponent, J.D. Hayworth.

McCain, in his 28 years in Congress, has never taken an earmark! This is remarkable. Even Ron Paul does earmarks. Regarding J.D.Hayworth, who is McCain’s opponent, the Wall Street Journal (June 23, 2010) stated,

“During 12 years in Congress, Mr. Hayworth may have talked a good game about restraining spending. Far more than Mr. McCain, however, he was an “enabler” of questionable budget items. It was Mr. Hayworth, not Mr. McCain, who voted for a 2003 prescription drug benefit that added enormously to the nation’s future liabilities. It was Mr. Hayworth who voted for bloated farm and highway bills, while Mr.McCain opposed them. It was Mr. Hayworth who was a consistent seeker and supporter of pork-barrel Congressional earmarks. Mr. McCain, on the other hand, never requested earmarks in appropriations bills and led many a crusade against those he felt were improperly slipped into bills.”

Hayworth starred in a notorious infomercial for the National Grants Council (bankrupt) promoting free government money. Check out the video to the right, and watch Mr. Hayworth in action. Disgusting, isn’t he?

Other reasons that McCain deserves to remain in office is that he is a strong supporter of the American military, and he promotes US border security. National Review Online endorsed McCain because he has never voted for a broad-based tax increase.

When writing about McCain, one cannot overlook McCain’s biggest sacrifice for America. He was a prisoner of war in Viet Nam from 1967 to 1973. For over five years, the Viet Cong tortured him daily. When his captors offered him an early release because his father was a Navy Admiral, McCain refused. He wanted prisoners who had been there longer sent home first.

To say that John McCain is an American hero is an understatement. He is a champion of freedom, and everything it represents. I’ve been voting since 1976. I’ve never been prouder to cast a ballot than when I voted for McCain in the 2008 presidential election. He’s an endangered species, an honest politician. He’s a maverick.
